Weak signals: build a disciplined observation log

WHAT TO CHECK

A dated signal log that distinguishes observations, hypotheses and the decisions they may reopen.

  1. 01Separate an observed trace from the story attached to it.
  2. 02Compare at least two plausible interpretations and identify disconfirming evidence.
  3. 03Assign an owner, review date and escalation threshold to the observation log.

Capture traces before they become narratives

Log the original source, date, actor, market context and what was actually observed. Keep quotations or data separate from the interpretation so that later readers can challenge it.

  • Primary trace and source
  • Context and affected assumption
  • Confidence and missing evidence

Test competing meanings

Ask whether the trace could be noise, a local exception, a lagging consequence or an early sign of a structural change. Search deliberately for counterexamples rather than only confirming material.

  • Alternative explanation
  • Disconfirming observation
  • Implication if confirmed

Connect watch to a decision

A useful watchlist specifies the strategic choice it might reopen: market entry, offer design, capability investment or scenario. Review it on a named cadence and escalate only when the threshold is met.

  • Decision at stake
  • Threshold for escalation
  • Owner and review date

LIMIT

Weak signals do not predict the future. A vivid anecdote, a single expert or an isolated article is not a trend.
